Bernie and Pat Zondervan outside their Grand Rapids headquarters

The publishing house of Zondervan was launched during the Great Depression (1931) by brothers Pat and Bernie Zondervan in the spare bedroom of a Michigan farmhouse. Together, they created a company that shattered expectations of what a religious publisher could achieve. This photograph, taken in 1951, shows the brothers with editor Ted Engstrom (center) outside of their headquarters in downtown Grand Rapids.
