By the time I was ten, I’d probably read The Secret Garden thirty times. I have entire paragraphs memorized to this day. The characters, the setting, the language, the complicated relationships: I was transported and transfixed. I discovered early on that, for me, books were magic. I’ve read thousands of books, and I’m convinced that more than my formal education, professional experience, writing career, or craft development, the single practice that shaped and sharpened my mind has simply been reading good books my entire life.
