A book that influenced me and why . . . Little House on the Prairie. The joy of simple things, the knowledge that family really is everything, the many things I learned—how to dig a well, separate wheat from chaff, make butter while driving a team of oxen cross-country . . . these books were practical magic for a dorky kid with thick glasses. I still read them from time to time, and always feel happy for having opened those beautiful covers.
