It sounds ridiculous, but reading saved my life. When I was younger, and ill with depression and anxiety, books were a big part of my recovery. Books became a kind of meditation for me, a way out of my mind, or of making space inside it for something else. Fiction particularly was and remains important. Stories became my religion. Just the idea of change—which is what stories are—can fill you with hope. I will always need to read.
