Publisher George Allen & Unwin, later purchased by HarperCollins, publishes the 9,250-page manuscript of The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, still published today by HarperCollins UK, becomes a publishing phenomenon, selling more than 150 million copies worldwide in more than 25 languages.
