Letter from E. B. White regarding Stuart Little

E. B. White (Andy) writes to his editor Eugene Saxton (Gene), presenting his manuscript for Stuart Little and describing how he came up with the now-classic character of Stuart: “At the risk of seeming a very whimsical fellow indeed, I will have to break down and confess to you that Stuart Little appeared to me in a dream, all complete, with his hat, his cane, and his brisk character.” Today Stuart Little is a perennial bestseller and a much-loved children’s book.
