I write because I am happiest when I am in what Tillie Olsen once described to me as “that bless’ed state.” I write because I love story, love to imagine life in other times. I explore theme through my characters, and I have written about loss, love and war, PTSD, about what a life is worth, how we stay in balance, what it might have been like to grow up as a deaf child in the early 1900s, about how an artist reconciles his childhood past as a prisoner in a Canadian internment camp, about how art saves us. Every book I create, every detail I uncover through research, carries me along on a unique journey.
